PUTRAJAYA: JobsMalaysia, the Human Resources Ministry's portal, helped secure 283,455 jobs in the last four years and is expecting more applicants this year. The ministry's director-general of labour Datuk Sh Yahya Sh Mohamed said that last year, 110,239 Malaysians found work in various industries and sectors. Of the figure, 321 and 512 workers were from the hardcore poor and disabled communities, respectively.
The latest figure sees a continuing upward trend since the portal was set up in 2007, which he described as an "encouraging response" to the service. In 2009, 97,071 people secured jobs via the portal, while over 55,000 found work in 2008. In 2007 there were 20,817 successful applicants.
"The increase is due to the fact that there is a guarantee as the portal is run by the government. "Applicants trust the service which also provides a follow-up action. "With this service there is no excuse that individuals find it difficult to look for a job," he said yesterday, adding that 282,148 individuals registered with the portal last year. Sh Yahya also revealed that there were 365,000 vacancies last year including in the service, sales and secretarial sectors. And with some 3.3 million jobs said to be created over the next decade due to the economic restructuring under the Economic Transformation Programme, the department is expecting more people to apply for middle and upper level jobs.
This will see the department liaising with economic corridors such as the Iskandar Malaysia development corridor to identify the needs and fill vacancies. He said this year, the department would be getting employers to attend work placement programmes and work closely with the human resource industries. Sectors which will offer a lot of opportunities this year were the service, manufacturing and electronic sectors. "Applicants, however, must be honest when it comes to disclosing their qualifications."
